Problem:

Patients with Binge Eating Disorder often lose control of their eating due to stress or emotional fluctuations, and therefore require comprehensive interventions to regulate emotions, improve eating habits, and receive psychological support. However, existing treatments usually focus on a single approach such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, or natural therapy, and lack an integrated platform. Emotional eaters are particularly prone to relapse in high-pressure environments, and current solutions fail to provide stress relief, psychological support, and nutritional education at the same time.

Solution:

We designed Pureplate Journey, a location-based immersive experience that combines natural therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Through an exploratory journey in Sydney’s Royal National Park, users unlock healthy food ingredients, engage in mindfulness practices, and finally enjoy a personalized mindful meal. In this process of interacting with nature, they gradually rebuild a healthier relationship with food.

Process:

We began with literature reviews, surveys, and interviews to identify key emotional triggers of binge eating disorder and the gaps in existing therapies. Our initial idea of a mindful restaurant was later replaced by a real setting in the Royal National Park to enhance immersion. In the first iteration, we combined walking exploration with mindfulness practices, and in the second iteration, user feedback led us to add personalized routes, hidden ingredient stations, and emotion tracking. The final design integrates a mobile app with outdoor exploration to help users gradually ease binge eating symptoms through meditation, exploration, and mindful eating.
